Beagle Personality traits and Temperament

They are friendly, gentle, sweet, and funny dogs thus making them highly popular as house pets. Their extremely amiable nature is well suited for households with children. Children often fall in love with their goofy temperament and the Beagles in return have extreme devotion to their owners. They never show any signs of aggression even when they are rough handled by children. They also do very well around other pets if allowed to socialise properly.

The breed is very alert with a heightened sense of smell. They can sniff out rabbits and hamsters that are miles away and have a tendency to poke its nose around anything that interests them. They love to explore and is prone to wander off once they catch a whiff of an interesting scent.

They are voracious eaters and won’t stop eating till they are about to burst. Quite often with their have a tendency to rummage through your trash in search of tasty tit-bits. If there is a beagle in the house, always secure your pantry and cupboards as they are mischievous food thieves and cannot resist the urge for a good snack.

Even though they are alert dogs their extreme friendly nature to strangers makes them very poor guard dogs. They are not suited for an apartment life style as they are high energy dogs requiring plenty of exercise. A house with a fenced yard is most suitable for this breed. They have to be regularly exercised and taken for long walks. It is a social dog and needs the companionship of either other dogs or its human family.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

The breed is characterised by a water resistant dense coat of short bristles and comes in a wide range of coat colours. They are moderate shedders and the hairs are not very noticeable. A daily brushing is needed to remove any dead or loose hair. Usually a rubber, wire or hard bristled brush is needed for brushing. They are very clean dogs and do not require regular baths, usually a rub down with a damp towel will suffice.

As they are drop-eared dogs, they have high susceptibility to ear infections and so ears must be regularly checked. Brushing of teeth must be done two –three times a week to prevent plaques and tartar build up. Nails must be trimmed on a monthly basis.

The Beagle are very intelligent but can be very mischievous and very bold at times so proper precautions must be taken when training and/or socializing this fun loving breed.
