Miniature American Eskimo Dog Personality traits and Temperament

They are great companion dogs and are known for their high intelligence and inquisitive behavior. They are lovable, playful dogs with a good sense of humour. Their charming, alert and intelligent nature makes them an ideal family dog. They love spending time around the family and do not handle loneliness well.

These dogs need a lot of exercise failing which they can become destructive. They could become hyperactive and may develop vices such as obsessive barking, aggressiveness and separation anxiety.

This breed is generally territorial by nature and considered as an excellent watchdog, they are not aggressive, at the same time, are generally quite vocal and bark at any stranger, who comes close to them and their owners’ territory.

This breed especially loves kids, cares for them and loves being around them, but they do not like being squeezed or rough handled. They are social to other dogs and cats if introduced early.

They cannot be considered an ideal bred for novices and first time owners as a lot of care is needed for their upbinging.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

This breed is generally white and have a double coat consists of a short, dense undercoat, with a longer guard hair as an outer coat. Hair is normally straight with no curl or wave, the coat is generally thicker and longer around the neck and chest, gives a “lion-like” head, especially in males. The body is generally covered with thicker, longer hair, and also the tail carried loosely on the back.

Eskimos being long haired sheds a lot, therefore frequent brushing to matting and to avoid fur falls. A thorough brushing two or three times a week and bathing once in every couple of month is advised. Their ears should checked once a week for dirt, bad odor, also toenail trimming at least once a month is highly recommended.

As they are highly intelligent, they catch on with the training quickly. Because of the dog’s high intelligence and its willingness to please, it is easy to train and often ranks among the top scorers in obedience trials.

Diet: These dogs need high-quality dry food. The requirement generally depends on the size and their activity level. This breed could become overweight easily, so proper diet and exercise is needed to maintain an overall well being.

Health problems: Generally this breed is very healthy, but Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), juvenile cataract, hip dysplasia and patella luxation are the health problems reported to found in this breed. Tear staining and some dental issues are occasionally been reported.

Mixed breeds

Boskimo is a cross between the Miniature American Eskimo and the Boston Terrier. The Boskimo dogs are very active, agile and eager to please type dogs.

Pomimo is a cross between the Miniature American Eskimo and the Pomeranian. he Pomimos are affectionate and has a good temperament generally. They make wonderful watchdogs as they are very loyal and smart.

Shih-Mo is a cross between the Miniature American Eskimo and the Shih Tzu. Shih-mo’s are wonderful family pets. Very loyal and occasionally territorial of owner. They can become overly attached to their owner.
