Patterdale Terrier Personality Traits and Temperament

Patterdale Terriers are active, energetic dogs. They were bred to be working dogs, and they thrive on at least an hour of exercise and energetic training every day.

They love water and swimming. However, they’re not as energy-intensive as some dogs, and will be relatively calm indoors if their exercise requirements are met. Always walk on a leash, because they tend to dash off after anything that catches their eye.

Patterdale Terriers often bond very closely with their families, and they tend to love children. However, they’re fond of rough games, and this can be too much for small children. They were bred to hunt rats, and their prey instinct makes them unsuitable for keeping around smaller pets, including cats. Don’t leave a Patterdale at home by himself; he’ll dig and destroy things.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

Dense, coarse double coat. Does not require regular combing or brushing, although brushing to remove loose hair (and cut down on the amount being shed in your home and on your clothing) is a good idea.

Rough-coated Patterdale Terriers may require stripping in warmer weather, but will not shed much. As all Patterdale Terriers love to dig, regular bathing may be required.
