Short coat Chihuahua Personality traits and Temperament
They are very sassy dogs with a larger than life attitude. Fun loving and busy, they like nothing better than to be close to their people. They follow them everywhere in the house and ride along in tote bags when their people run errands or go shopping. They are very affectionate and can also be very feisty.
They are apartment dogs and should never be housed outdoors. They cannot tolerate extreme climates especially cold weather. During winters they must be provided with a sweater or a warm blanket. If they are allowed to play in the yard, their activities must be supervised as they can easily escape from the yard and explore the neighbourhood.
These dogs are not recommended n houses with small children. The dogs can get hurt easily if manhandled by children. They can also snap and nip at children if they feel threatened by their actions. They can co-exist with other dogs but socialization must be done at a very early age. They are friendly towards cats.
They are very mistrustful of strangers and can be good watchdogs. They have a tendency to nip and bite at anything and have earned the nickname of ‘Armpit Piranha’ for a good reason. Therefore these dogs must be socialised very early to the members of the family to avoid such catastrophic event.
These dogs can get attached to a particular person in the family and likes spending time with them the most. They hate being left alone and can very vocal during these times. For such a tiny breed they can create lot of commotion when they get bored
Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding
These are a wash-and-go dog. Grooming them takes only a few minutes each week. Brush him weekly with a rubber grooming mitt or a brush with short, natural bristles.
They shed small amounts year round and may shed somewhat more heavily in the spring and fall.
Bathing can be done once in 2 weeks. Trim his nails regularly, usually every couple of weeks and keep ears clean. . Brush the teeth at least two or three times a week

How to Train this dog
Chihuahuas are intelligent and fast learners. They can compete in agility and obedience trials with just as much enthusiasm and success as larger dogs. But they are also very stubborn and would require a lot of persuasion on your part. Use positive reinforcement in the form of praise and food rewards when training your Chihuahua. They need consistent rules and structure if they are to learn effectively. They are difficult to house-train and would require a lot of patience on your part.
Health Issues and Food
Diet: Chihuahuas are mostly picky eaters and proper care must be taken to provide them with adequate nutrition. Chihuahuas are prone to hypoglycemia and could be at a critical state if allowed to go too long without a meal and at the same time, care must be exercised not to overfeed them which will render them diabetic in due course
Allergies: They are prone to allergies. One of the most common types of internal allergy triggers is food. Certain medications can also trigger allergic reactions. Shampoos, conditioners and soaps are also sources of allergies.
Health problems: They are also prone to some genetic anomalies, often neurological ones, such as epilepsy and seizure disorders. There are reports of hydrocephalus (abnormally large head) and molleras (soft spot in the skull) in this breed in the first several months of their life. This breed requires expert veterinary attention in dental care and pregnancy as the breeding females may experience dystocia.
Overfeeding also may lead to shortening their life and may lead diabetes. Even hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is also reported and is dangerous too.
As they got large protruding eyes, Chihuahuas are prone to eye infections or eye injury, therefore daily wiping and grooming is necessary this will in turn reduce the tear staining.
Dental issues, Collapsed trachea¸ and chronic bronchitis are other health concern characteristic of the Chihuahua breed. Patellar luxation (patella dislocation in another word) is another major genetic problem with this breed which may render them immobile due course. They are also prone to hear related disorders such as pulmonary stenosis and heart murmurs
Malchi is a Chiuaua Maltese. They are good companion dogs but are not suited for households with children. These mix dogs require fair amount of exercises.
