Skye Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

Skye Terriers are agile and strong, happy, lively and inquisitive. They are very intelligent and cunning as well as independent. They are very affectionate towards their owners and thrive on attention from the owners. They need enough physical and mental stimulation or else they get bored easily and tend to get snappy and aggressive. They love to dig and if left unsupervised in the yard will enjoy digging up the space. Skye Terriers can do well in apartments.

They can make an excellent companion for older children if properly socialized. Their terrier temperament may make them too feisty to be a playmate for children younger children. Always supervise the interaction between children and the dogs. They do not socialize with other dogs and can be very aggressive especially if both are males. They tend to chase cats and other small pets.

They are reserved and cautious toward strangers, traits that make him an excellent watchdog. They are very aloof to visitors and is not easily sociable with them.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

Skye terrier’s coat has two layers. It is double coated, with a short, soft undercoat and a hard, straight topcoat they are easy to take care of. No trimming is needed and it can be easily cared for with weekly brushing. Use a pin brush or long-toothed comb. A bath every two to three weeks keeps the coat clean. Be sure to brush or comb out any tangles before bathing the dog

Other grooming needs include dental hygiene and nail care. Brush your Skye’s teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the accompanying bacteria. Daily is better.

They can be stubborn and a bit hard to train. They have a dominant personality and will he Skye will need guidance from puppyhood to become a well-mannered pet. The Skye Terriers need to be physically and mentally stimulated. Train this sensitive dog with loving firmness and you will easily earn his confidence and respect. They respond well to a firm voice and positive-reinforcement techniques that involve food rewards, praise, and play.

Early house training, socialization and exposure towards many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences are essential make this an excellent animal.

Health Issues and Food

Diet: The breed should be given high quality dry dog food .The diet should match the dietary and hereditary requirements of the breed. Dry food /dry kibble will help prevent the disorders like build-up of plaque, tooth loss, gum disease and bad breath. The breed has a tendency to overeat. Hence the diet should be regularly monitored.

Allergies: Prone to contact and skin allergies

Health problems: The Skye Terriers are strong and sturdy animals. They are prone to Degenerative disc disease. Excessive exercise will harm them as the bones get affected. They may develop a limp as a result.

Mammary cancer, hemangiosarcomas (a malignant tumour of the blood vessels), autoimmune disease, and hyperthyroidism are other concerns of the breed.
