Toy Poodle Personality traits and Temperament

Toy Poodles are also known as Pudle, Caniche or Barbone. They are very intelligent animals with a high sense of dignity. They carry themselves with an air of importance and love hunting. They are happy, lively and inquisitive, who are usually bright and quick to learn. They have a terrific sense of humor and are natural-born clowns. Being the center of attention makes them happy. They have an astonishing capacity for behaviors and tricks involving both brains and agility. It is entirely possible for you to be outwitted by a Poodle.

They are the ultimate companion dogs. Just be sure their busy minds have enough to keep them out of mischief. They consider themselves a part of the family and sometimes can tend take on a bossy role. It is very easy to spoil these dogs. They do need a good amount of exercise and they should be taken for walks daily after that they can be extremely happy as lap dogs and TV-watching buddies.

They are wonderful around older children and can make great playmates for them. But due to their small size they can get hurt easily when younger kids handle them roughly. They love to be around other pets and do exceptionally well with cats.

They are protective of their home and family, and if strangers approach your house, they will be instantly alert and bark to let you know. And although they are affectionate with the family, they may take a while to warm up to new people.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

The Poodle coat needs a lot of upkeep to stay beautiful and healthy. Most Poodle owners take their dogs to a professional groomer every three to six weeks. The fine, curly coat that works well in the water needs to be clipped regularly, typically about every six to eight weeks, depending on your preferences. It mats easily, and requires regular brushing at home, even with professional grooming care. Left untrimmed, the coat will naturally curl into cords. Toy Poodles do not shed. They have hair and not fur on the coat. This needs to be groomed on a regular basis. Their coats should be brushed daily and teeth should also be maintained well.

Ears should be inspected and cleaned with soft cotton. They can be given baths weekly and their nails should be trimmed regularly. Tear stains are a huge problem and to cut down on stains, gently wipe down the face daily with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth dipped in warm water.
