Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding
They have a soft, dense, thick undercoat and a rough outer coat and are low shedders. The outer coat can be groomed by hand stripping or clipping. If they are not clipped, then they have to be stripped twice a year. Trimming is usually needed on the feet, and around the ears and eyes. The hair on the head is often plucked to produce that definitive round shape you see on show dogs. The coat stays fairly clean and he should only be bathed when necessary. To keep that coat a nice sparkly white, the Westie requires some tidying and may need to be wiped down frequently.
