Yorkshire Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

Yorkshire Terriers are nicknamed Yorkies and are happy, lively and inquisitive, who are usually bright and quick to learn. They are a very cuddly dog with a laid back attitude to life. But they can also be super mischievous and will be always working out new formulas to test the owner’s patience. They do not like being left alone much and need lots of attention.

Yorkshire Terriers are lovers of comfort and require early socialization. They are an easy dog breed to train who require physical and mental stimulation. They make good apartment dogs provided they are given moderate exercise daily.

They are affectionate towards their owners as one would expect from a companion dog, they’re sometimes suspicious of strangers, and will bark at strange sounds and intruders. When excited they could be very yappy and hard to stop.

They do not gel well with small children and can T become snappish if they’re startled or teased. Therefore if there are small children in the house it would be a good idea to constantly supervise their interactions.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

Their coat is long, silky, and perfectly straight and tends to get lighter with age. The hair is slightly darker at the base of the ears and on the muzzle.  Grooming is to be done carefully as the hair has a tendency to tangle. Their coats should be brushed daily. They can be given baths weekly and their nails should be trimmed regularly. Professional help should be sought while grooming especially for beginners.

They tend to form a lot of tartar on their teeth and can lose their teeth at a young age, so brush their teeth regularly and schedule a professional cleaning by your vet at least once a year. Ears should be examined regularly as these breeds are prone to ear infections
